Common Certification Mistakes Importers Make

  • Accepting a CE certificate without verifying the Notified Body. Some suppliers present self-issued CE declarations as "certification."   1. Request a copy of the actual certificate (PDF), not just the certificate number. A certificate number alone is not verifiable. The full PDF shows the issuing body, scope, model numbers covered, and validity dates -- all essential for customs clearance.
  2. Verify the Notified Body number (CE) or issuing lab (CSA/UL). For CE: search the 4-digit NB number at the EU NANDO database. For CSA: use CSA Group's online certificate directory. For UL: use UL Product iQ database.
  3. Match the manufacturer name and address on the certificate to the factory. Certificates are issued to a specific legal entity at a specific address. If your supplier's name differs from the certificate holder, ask why -- the certificate may belong to a different factory entirely.
  4. Check the certificate scope -- does it list your specific model? Certificates list covered model ranges. A certificate for "ARC-200, ARC-250" may not cover "ARC-400." Confirm your exact model number appears in the scope of coverage.
  5. Request test reports for your specific model. The underlying test reports (EMC, LVD, thermal) provide far more detail than the certificate alone. A supplier who cannot produce test reports may not have actually tested the equipment through a qualified lab.
  6. Check the certificate issue date and expiration. CE declarations are valid indefinitely but should reference current directives. CSA, UL, and EAC certificates have explicit expiration dates. Do not accept an expired certificate under any circumstances.
  7. For new models: ask for the test timeline. If the supplier says "we can get CE for that model," ask how long it will take. CE testing for a new welding machine model typically takes 4-12 weeks depending on the Notified Body's schedule. Be skeptical of promises shorter than 4 weeks.
