- Select the right shielding gas for cosmetic welds. For mild steel MIG welding where appearance matters, use a C25 mix (75% Ar / 25% CO2) instead of pure CO2. The argon-rich blend produces a smoother arc with fewer spatter droplets, a flatter bead profile, and less post-weld oxidation. On stainless steel, use 98% Ar / 2% CO2 or a helium-tri-mix (90% He / 7.5% Ar / 2.5% CO2) for wetting and colour control.
- Fixturing is half the battle. Thin sheet metal and tube distort easily under welding heat. Invest in rigid steel or cast-aluminium jigs with toggle clamps at every joint.
